WAEC Reveals: Over N1.5bn was used to conduct the 2020 WASSCE

It's been a week since the west African Examination Council WAEC released the result of candidates that participated in the 2020 West Africa Senior school certificate examination WASSCE.

The 2021 WASSCE registration is ongoing and surely lot of funds are needed to successfully conduct this exam. In this regards, The Head of WAEC National Office in Nigeria, Areghan Patrick has revealed that over N1.5 billion was used to conduct the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE)

And so urges the government that it would need more funds to conduct the 2021 WASSCE as the registration fees collected from candidates aren't enough to fully fund their budget.

This was disclosed in Abuja at the 2021 budget defence before the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services.

The council head stated that over 1.5 million candidates who sat for the examination were made to pay N13, 900 as examination fee. He further said that 80,000 officials were engaged to mark the papers.

Mr Patrick who maintained that only registration and administration fees came to the council’s coffers, stressed that the council is not a revenue-generating body but an assessment body that collects money to conduct examinations for students.

He said WAEC was not fully funded and was currently having a deficit of N7 billion. He pleaded that the 2020 budget should be fully released to the council as money collected from candidates was not enough to conduct the examinations.
